Club History

Pembrokeshire Harriers formed in 2001 by the Amalgamation of the two previously established Pembrokeshire clubs of ‘Cleddau Athletic Club’ and ‘Preseli Harriers’.

Cleddau A.C

Cleddau Athletic Club was formed in 1970 when the then brand new cinder track was constructed at Sir Thomas Picton School Haverfordwest, formerly Haverfordwest Secondary Modern. The founder members included the then Head of P E at S T P, Gordon Rayner, Trevor Thomas, also a School Teacher, Miss Dilys Watts, Conrad Bryant (Hon Treasurer) and Mike Richards (Hon Sec). The club was largely Haverfordwest orientated until the Cleddau Bridge opened but did have a county wide base thereafter. Over the early years it was mainly Track & Field but gradually included Cross Country and ultimately Road Running -   due to the efforts of the teachers who were in the club like Gordon Rayner and Trevor Thomas .Also, Conrad Bryant, Mike Richards and Terry Rees were involved. The club competed in the Welsh Mens & Women's League with varying fortunes and in the Gwent Cross Country League and also the juniors in the Glamorgan Young Athletes League ( later called the Kate Williams League ). When Trevor Thomas retired as Chairman, Mrs Dorothy Walter of Herbranston took his place. Huw Morgan took Terry Rees's post when he took promotion and Sue Rees, Terry's wife replaced Conrad Bryant . The club had strong links in this period with Romilley Sur Seine, the twin town of Milford.

Preseli Harriers

The club was formed in 1988/89 by the late Gerald Codd with a handful of youngsters and senior athletes. Mrs Corinne Codd was invested as club secretary and ran that side of the club until Gerald sadly died in 1999. He was an excellent coach, a great inspiration to all who knew him and is sadly missed. The club went from strength to strength during its twelve years of existance. The club won numerous League titles and its athletes won Championships and International honours. These included two Welsh 1st Division Women's titles and the men rapidly won promotion from the 7th Division to accompany the women in the 1st Division. The Juniors won two Welsh Plate finals, the Kate Williams League and the Golden Wonder Trophy...forerunners of the present day Louise Arthur League and Gerald Codd Trophy. The athletes won many Welsh vests and titles. Three athletes who stood out during that period were..Karl Palmer, Teresa Andrews and Danielle Selly. Karl Palmer represented Wales as a senior athlete at cross country and steeplechase. Teresa Andrews who represented Wales still holds the Dyfed Schools record and won the AAA multi event National title. Danielle Selly was a sprinter and hurdler who represented Wales and went on to represented GB in the Junior World Games in South America. There were many more great athletes but too many to mention for this brief period of Preseli Harriers existance.

The amalgamation of Cleddau and Preseli was a good day for athletics in the county when these two great clubs formed the Pembrokeshire Harriers and we look forward to many Welsh titles for the club and its athletes in the future
